POLICE AMBUSHED -
PITTSBURGH, PA- APRIL 4, 2009
Deadly ambush
in Stanton Heights, a suburb of Pittsburgh, claims the lives of
3 city police officers.
Within minutes, all three officers were
fatally shot by the subject of a domestic all, later identified
as Richard "Pop" Poplawski, 22. A discharged Marine, he
adhered to a number of right-wing conspiracy theories and expressed
fears of a "Zionist nation" revoking his right to own
guns.
Police said Mr. Poplawski knew his mother
had called 911 and knew officers would come to his house. Wearing
a bulletproof vest, he apparently lay in wait, heavily armed with
an AK-47 assault-style rifle, a .22-caliber rifle and a revolver.
After a four hour siege and although wounded,
he was apprehended after police negotiators convinced Poplawski
to give himself up.
ABC News Correspondent, Rachel Martin and
Vija Udenans, Producer came in from Washington to cover the story.
Ben Popio and Don Yost along with Jim Massaro provided the Live
coverage. |
